Recording electric guitar: Loadbox (Torpedo Captor), Microphones, Plugins (IK multimedia Amplitube)
This video compares the three techniques for recording electric guitar: microphones, load box / attenuator (using Two Notes Torpedo Captor) and DI and plugins (using Radial Engineering ProDI and IK Multimedia Amplitube).
We learn how to connect the guitar, DI box, load box and amp to capture all the configurations simultaneously, and discuss pitfalls of recording miced-up guitar at home.
We go over the entire mixing process, learn why we should avoid recording with compression, delay and reverb, add and mix overdubs, and apply mixing techniques (group channels and sends) to create three mixes of the same solo and compare the outcome for each technique.
Lastly, we come back to discuss what we have learned in the next few weeks, when working on the final mix and master of the song.

This is the most entertaining gear review I’ve EVER watched. Thank you for keeping my ADD at bay!! 🖤
Jesus Loves You All
Love my Captor X. Stocks sims are actually shit, imo. And the new Genome plugin beats the hell out of the Wall of Sound. I also don't play anything that's not high gain, so..
Genome looks nice, I'll have to try it :)
I really love your video style, subscribed.
Interesting video, thanks for taking the time for this. I switched from recording real amps to amp sims years ago - mostly S-Gear (sounds most natural in the mix), Amplitube (a bit in your face) and Tonex (great). However, I've now switched back to old school style recording my Katana through dynamic or ribbon mics, with condenser room mics. If I'm tracking my parts along with the other guitarist in the band then a bit of mic bleed into eachother's channels adds to the 3D feel of the sound without having to pile on loads of plugins. A sound-treated room helps a lot though!
what coffee beans do you use?
@@hugo2553 single origin Brazil cerrado arabica, my favorite for espresso :)
I have a Marshall JVM Head that I like for room furniture. This is connected to a Captor etc but I just never use it. Looks good, that's about it. I have a Pod Go that I use all the time - through an FRFR speaker and that's awesome. My plugins include Amplitube 5 and Helix Native. Amplitube is I think complex to control, but in your recording sounded fantastic. I'm more familiar with the Helix Native and that sounds good, all through IR's of course. For recording I would use the plug-ins and for playing live, the Pod Go. I'll sell the JVM when I can find someone who likes Marshall furniture as much as I do! Cheers!
@@NovacomNZ yeah, that's another thing: for everyday practice, nothing beats multi effect pedals, especially if they have a drum machine built-in. I linked the full processing video in the description, I'm not speaking as slowly or coherently as here, but it has the entire process of making amplitube sound good - what usually does most of the work is overdubs, eq and reverb. But especially overdubs.
Sir, I want know that tha string, sax, flute and etc effects play properly or not in gk3 picup ?
Yes, strings and flute are very nice, but sax - less nice :)
❤ beautyful masterpiece, thank you
Haha best reviewed keyboard on yt
I do almost the same. My loadbox is plugged in two IR loaders just to avoid to open the daw if I only wanna practice
Man you really are pretty funny
What a fantastic overview/review. This video literally showed me multiple reasons why the Torpedo line is NOT what I totally thought I absolutely needed. Thanks so much!
What is the reason for including your mastication noise in the silly camera shot with your disgusting burger?
...specifically to piss you off 4 years after posting the video.

Good job sweetie!!!! You know you were not even hear on this planet when this song came out in 1996, LOL!!!! You got some really great people in your life to introduce you to this jem.
jesus christ i cannot handle hearing you eat.
So miss Benjamin Orr!!! Pete Woodroffe Music UK
Thats a hard song to cover. I know I've covered it myself. Good job with it. I'm proud of you, You got a sweet voice Jennifer. You and Beth Hirsh should get together and harmonize this tune. That would be great!!!!
That would be special for sure!!!! Then if you really wanna get special include Sia and Sophie Barker as well. If you don't know who they are look up a band called Zero 7. They both are featured on a couple albums by them.
Haha, funny and useful video. Thanks!
Subbed, informative and funny. Do you think this can allow me to buy an SV20h and see the police less often? No volume knob... that's a big let down but it seems a lot better than the similarly priced ones with volume control down to zero. Maybe add a master volume to the output of the captor? So I get the reactive load but fine control on volume? Maybe I should just stick with my DSL but that one also needs volume to sound nice so I think I want a loadbox either way and this solves a lot of problems. I can't record anything past 22 PM, that would solve that.
Some electronics experts explained why there is no fluid volume control on less expensive loadboxes in the comments here - basically, as I understand it, a volume control (volume trim) for low power signal is 1-2 elements (potentiometer and sometimes a capacitor to compensate for eq changes), while trim volume Control for high power signals is a few orders if magnitude more complex. If you are worried about the attenuation level, captor x has two settings (-20 and -38) - maybe it's a better choice. As I get older and lazier, I start to think that maybe the onboard DSP is also a good thing - those things do NOT sound good without impulse response, and setting one up in DAW is one of those things that take only 5 minutes, but gradually start to piss you off when you do them the 50th time 😅
Great video. had all I needed toknow in 33 seconds, thats how ya do it boi
Good video!!
ua-cam.com/users/shortsmTnj9PYe7_Q?feature=share ;)
What an outstanding video! Thanks for the education on these two, Two Notes thing-a-ma-jigs. I was wondering what they were like and you completely steered me away from them. I'm just looking for the attenuation. Yes, amps with built in power soaks would seem the way to go. For attenuation I will look elsewhere. The Jet City Jettenuator isn't available even used and who knows if Soldano will make it again. The knock off version seems to be made by Bugera with their PS1 for only $100 which rivals the Rivera Rock Crusher at five times the price. I'm also looking at the Weber Mass Attenuator (go to their actual site and not someplace like Reverb where there's only a couple very old used models) which uses a speaker "motor" inside to mimic working with a cab.
Rheostats (what most attenuators use as a volume knob) can be a pretty unreliable, and they’re quite large. That’s why both the Two Notes Captor X, and the Fryette Power Stations avoid them (two notes by using fixed/switched attenuation steps, the power stations by just fully attenuating all the time and re amping).
Experiencing their overpriced, cheap material, cheap construction and substandard tone, I never suggest anyone to go for any Jim Dunlop products let alone cry babies. This is no 1980s and there are tons of good alternatives out there nowadays.
Get to the point, Jesus.
Best cover at YT about this song and I watch a lot!!
I've got the last option, buy a new amp. I choose Mesa Boogie Mark V 25 with attenuators, cab simulator and DI for recording. Expensive, but it's an end-to-end solution in one package. Thanks for the deep and honest review.
I have the 35 watt version and I wish it had a direct out since the analog cab sim cannot compete with modern IRs. Also the build in solution reacts differently than having the cab on.
I've tried lots of controllers with mini keys, and these are the best of the bunch for me. And the build quality is actually pretty good, especially with the full size USB connector.
Nice one sir. I connect the boss ml-2 and mt-2 to the fx loop of the mesa mini rec in 10 watt. But it gets too louder on 25 watts. Now my question is can I connect this attenuator with the pedals on fx loop ?
Yes, the attenuator does not go into the effect loop, it goes between the amp and speaker.
@@lobster-music but I can still connect the boss pedals infront of the amp and then use this attenuator?
@@srinivaskumar615 yes, of course.
@@lobster-music great then. But I don’t have this software for my Logic Pro X. Any idea how do I download? Or the recording will be saved directly from the amp on the Logic Pro X as an audio track ?
@@srinivaskumar615 you have to connect is to your audio interface like any other sound source - so yeah, it becomes an audio track

Does this come with software so you can edit and print out if you want? I don't care about changing from piano to a organ, but want to put in quarter notes, half notes and others notes and inserts drum beats.
No, you are thinking about a DAW software - it does not come with one There are free DAWs however, like Reaper.

I think this is my favorite video on a side by side comparison of entry electric models.
I just picked up a GR30 on a whim this weekend, and it was a good trade so not out any real dough. My neighbor literally had the 13-pin cable I needed (how does THAT happen?), and I can see myself using it - it sounds and tracks better than I expected using a Godin SA Nylon string. Love the video. I revisited it today now that I have one of these 'future dust collectors'.
I'm planning to undust mine at some point - far from perfect, but they are quite enjoyable :) Have fun :)
great review but really disgusting to hear you eat for the first half of the video man..
Hello! I have the berhinger umx 490 and I wonder if the keys are thinner on this. I plan to get this to have it sit in the desk always

@@lobster-music great! How is the key feeling?

Wow, for all the reasons you mentioned and more I gave up on my GR 55 and just started getting more serious about learning to play piano and synths. Ty for the absolutely honest coverage.
love your video, so funny and useful !
As The Cars would say, this is 'Just What I Needed'. Quiet brilliant in-depth and informative. Still very relevant at the time of posting this.
Funny that you mention cars, I'm just finishing up a cover of 'drive', and I will also make a video comparing captor vs mic vs amp sim as a part of that :)
